SPIRIT LEAD THE WAY is about my friend Alana Alexander, who moved from Germany back to the United States. We had become really good friends playing gigs together and writing a few songs. Then came the pandemic, which made it even less foreseeable, when we could get together. Home alone with lots of time on my hands, I started writing the song. I still remember the last day I saw Alana here in Cologne, when we naively swore that despite all impasses we would stay in touch, that we would do gigs together someday in the future - even if there‘s a big pond in between us now.
I had the harmonies and parts of the melody written first. Looking for the message that the song was telling I somehow felt reminded of the long nightly phone calls that Alana and I had, talking about almost everything, but mostly music, career, philosophical topics and life. In the end, the lyrics are a destillate of all these conversations. The song actually is like a conversation - the verse starts with a question ”How long can I still go on this way?“ and establishes a viewpoint, while the chorus displays the other side of things. Giving hope, knowing that it’s never too late to do what you love. ”The world could still belong to you, you just take a leap of faith“.
